Bilbo
Bilbo came to Shetland Pony Club, from a lovely local family, in the spring of 2022. Aged 10 years old he is an experienced Shetland pony who is a delightful ride for smaller children. He is good at being led and he likes to teach children to trot and canter.
Special colour – bay roan
Bilbo is a very unusual colour, known as bay roan. It is really special as he is dark in the winter and summer and changes colour in the spring and autumn to be a lovely silvery colour in between.
Facts about Bilbo
Age: 10 years old
Size: Mini – 32 inches
Colour: Bay Roan
Size: ponies and horses are measured in hands (the width of a grown-up’s hand is about 4 inches). He is 8 hands (8hh), making him one of the smaller for Shetland ponies – also called a mini Shetland. Bilbo is a similar size to Simba, Dinky and Snowdrop.
Name: he is called Bilbo after the character Bilbo Baggins in Tolkien’s, the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, who is small and brave.
Breeding: he has very good breeding, with his parents and grandparents being well-bred Shetland ponies. His official name is Kingsacre Eddie.
Experience: he is well-trained and loves children and he enjoys being brushed and ridden. He has been trained to drive and pull a pony carriage, and has learned natural horsemanship, and to stand on a log. He has been in a gymkhana and dressed up as a dragon, so is used to all the fun activities we do at Shetland Pony Club.
Riding: our lovely pony will be used for: Starter Rides, Pony Share Members, Own a Pony Experiences and Pony Parties
Personality
Bilbo is a friendly pony. He is inquisitive and has made good friends with Toffee.

Today is the day when our new Shetland pony, Bilbo, is arriving at the Ranch – how exciting!
Bilbo has just had a short journey to get to us. He has come from a lovely family where he has been ridden and cared for by some children who have sadly outgrown him.
Our new Shetland Pony Bilbo settles in
When a new pony arrives at Shetland Pony Club we take great care to ensure they are introduced safely to the rest of the Shetlands, as some of the ponies can get jealous. We have over 20 ponies at The Ranch and they are all so excited to meet Bilbo. However, it takes a long time to introduce them all, over three weeks Rosemary will introduce one pony a day.
Find out if Bilbo makes friends:
- We started off by introducing Elgin Sunset, an older pony, who doesn’t take any notice of young Bilbo.
- Snowy and Toffee however want to play with Bilbo, you can see them racing around the field together having fun. Who is the fastest?
- After 3 weeks of meeting lots of new friends, Bilbo looks settled and happy. Can you see which pony he is rubbing at the end of the video?
