This weeks’ question is: can you feed acorns to horses? Now that it’s autumn at The Ranch we often get asked this question as horses and ponies love to eat many autumn goodies such as apples and carrots.
This year there is a bumper crop of acorns on our many oak trees around The Ranch, so feeding them to our animals might seem like a good idea.
Are acorns good for horses and ponies?
So, can you feed acorns to horses? No, acorns eaten in large amounts are poisonous to horses and ponies and can make them poorly. So, we have to clear up the acorns from under the trees to make sure that the horses and ponies don’t eat them.

Latest coronavirus changes and pony riding
The government changes from Saturday 17 October 2020 state that London and Elmbridge, the borough that Shetland Pony Club is in, have been moved into the high alert level for coronavirus.
What does this mean for my pony riding booking?
Pony riding fits into an exception category where people from different households can gather for outdoor exercise, organised outdoor sport, and licensed outdoor physical activity. So, you can still go ahead with your pony riding booking, but please follow our coronavirus procedures, which are put in place to keep you safe. New minimum riding age of 4
Shetland Pony Club is proud to be one of the first riding schools in the country to be awarded the Association of British Riding Schools Certification for COVID-19 Safe Working Practices. Having risk-assessed our riding in the light of the government guidelines, we have changed the age for riding to a minimum of 4 years old, until further notice. For children aged 2.5 – 4, we hope to be able to resume in the spring. Keep an eye on our weekly email, social media and the website here for more information.
