Join Rosemary in this week’s video where she looks at some of the joys and problems of rescuing Shetland Ponies.
Today our ponies at Shetland Pony Club are not rescue ponies. They are pedigree (registered) ponies and some of them have come from the Shetland Isles. However, if you’ve been following us for many years, you’ll know years ago we had the most wonderful rescue Shetland Pony called Cupcake.
Cupcake came from a home that wasn’t particularly good, they didn’t know how to look after him properly. We acquired him and he came to live at The Ranch for many happy years.
What are the problems with a rescue Shetland Pony?
Cupcake had not been feed correctly. This effected his:
Coat
Weight
Feet
Teeth
As a result rescue ponies often need a lot more medical attention. They need to see a vet more regularly and this costs more.
Most rescue ponies won’t have been to a dentist before, so the dentist bills are higher.
They need to see the farrier more as their hooves are often neglected and causes problems. They may even need remedial, specialist shoes which is also an added cost.
The cost of keeping a rescue Shetland Pony can be higher than a normal Shetland.
You also need to consider what experience your pony has had and if he is going to be a suitable pony to be around children. They can be frightened of certain situations. We wouldn’t recommend starting out with a rescue Shetland pony for riding for your children.
Cupcake brought a lot of joy, love and a lot of bills!
Although rescue ponies are often free to acquire they have bigger costs to keeping them than a regular Shetland Pony. Find out more about Cupcake here.

Shhhh… the Shetland ponies are sleeping! The ponies have been very busy with Jubilee Pony Street parties and Half Term. Now it’s time for the ponies to have a well-earned rest. Watch the video to see all the Shetland Ponies sleeping.
Can you see Dinky having a snooze in the sun?
Ponies do lie down for short periods of time in the field when they feel safe. The ponies like to rest in little groups together, generally with a look out pony to see if there is any danger.
Can you see Gordon looking out for his friends?
In the wild they would need to be careful that a tiger wouldn’t come and sneak up on them. So it’s a good idea to sleep in a group with a look out.

Last weekend we had our very own special Jubilee Shetland Pony Street Party!
The ponies are all dressed up in their Union Jack flags, Jubilee sashes and their little tiaras and crowns.
Can you see what special outfit Tintin is wearing for the celebrations?
In London the Trooping of the Colour Parade is under way, and in honour of The Queen we have our very own Pony Parade too. The skies were clear at The Ranch and we saw the aeroplanes that took part in the fly pass from London.
We had fun photos under the Jubilee arch and in the special photo frame. Can you see Prince William posing?
After the parade and photos, it’s time for party tea. We had lots of yummy cakes, sandwiches, and muffins. Everyone joined in and had so much fun. We think The Queen would’ve approved of our Pony Street Party!

In this special episode for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we are going to look at a trip I took to the Queen’s private estate at Balmoral to see her Highland Ponies!
Highland Ponies are native to the Highlands of Scotland, they like Shetlands but bigger. The Queen breeds them on her estate in Balmoral. I spent a day with the Stud Manager and we had lots of jobs to do.
First we had to give the ponies some hay
Then we had to fed the stallions, male ponies, a special feed
We drove around the Balmoral Estate; can you see what other animals I saw?
We then visited the mothers with their foals, they were adorable! Highland ponies are quite rare, so the Stud plays an important role in protecting them. The mothers’ give the foals milk to drink and then they learn to eat hay and grass. As the foals grow up, they are used for:
Riding
Transporting things around the hilly estate
It was such a special treat to see all the wonderful Highland Ponies. Thank you to HM The Queen for taking excellent care of her native breeds.

This week Rosemary saw the Queen at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. It’s the Queen’s favourite horse show and she has attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show every year since 1943.
Watch the video to find out which ponies and horses Rosemary saw at the show:
The Fell pony, they are like Shetlands although larger. It’s a special year for the Fell pony as it was the centenary of the Fell Society. They were invited to partake in a special parade at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Queen was photographed earlier this year with her two lovely Fell ponies to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee.
The Shetland Pony Grand National. Which we love, it’s special for us as our pony Gordon raced at Windsor in front of the Queen years ago!
Join us for Jubilee fun over half term!
To celebrate we are putting on special Jubilee fun pony rides along our Jubilee Trail around our beautiful meadows. Pony dress-up, followed by the opportunity to take photos of your child at our Platinum Jubilee Arch. Commemorative rosette and certificate included.
