Feeding secrets for happy Shetland ponies revealed
Discover the feeding secrets for happy Shetland ponies with Rosemary, the owner of award-winning Shetland Pony Club, as she answers the question – what should I feed a Shetland Pony?
Breakfast is key to start the day
Our Shetland ponies are in work, so a small feed at breakfast encourages the ponies to come in and helps them to start the day well. We use Balanced Horse Feeds Show Mix, which is very tasty, but ensures the ponies stay calm for riding.
Browsing on brambles
The Shetland ponies have a lunch break and eat grass and browse on bark and shrubs in our rewilding fields to add variety to their diet. They love herbs and milk thistles and we need to limit their grazing in summer to make sure they don’t get too fat, or sore feet.
Hay for winter warming
In winter, when the grass stops growing the ponies may also need hay. Keeping a ponies gut full of fibre helps to keep him warm from within. We monitor the ponies weight using our scales, to help keep them healthy all year long.
