Fluffy alert! Shetland Ponies fluff up for winter
The ponies are beginning to look super fluffy!

Now winter is approaching the ponies are starting to grow longer hair on top of their coats. In the summer the ponies’ coats are sleek, shinny and not fluffy.
As the hour changes and the days get shorter the ponies’ coats get longer. Interestingly researchers have found that it is the length of day that triggers the growth of the ponies’ coats as supposed to the temperature. The weather is quite mild, yet the Shetlands have fluffy coats.
The ponies also grow long hair on the top of their tails, this is called a snow chute this keeps snow off their tails during the winter. Oil in the ponies’ coats keeps the rain and water away from their bellies so they keep warm and cosy during the cold months.

Shetland Pony Walking is the perfect way for older children, teenagers and grown-ups to enjoy Shetland Ponies in the lovely Surrey countryside. Come and spend time, enjoying and leading your very own Shetland pony. £45/ person.
