Stop that Shetland pony galloping about!

Stop that Shetland pony galloping about at The Ranch. What is he doing and why?

Batman is galloping about in the big field at The Ranch. He is joined by Samson and Crème Caramel and they are galloping really fast. What is making them run away and how fast can they run?

Why is that Shetland pony galloping about?

Shetland ponies are flight animals and it’s their natural behaviour to run away or gallop about when they sense danger or something unexpected.

Is there something unusual at Shetland Pony Club that’s causing all that pony galloping?

Shetland Pony Club’s War Horse Poppy Parade

Shetland Pony Club marked the centenary of the end of the Great War with a War Horse Poppy Parade.

Members and friends of Shetland Pony Club came together to create a War Horse Poppy Garden in support of the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

The children prepared the ponies with poppies and beautiful poppy rosettes, handmade for the occasion.

The War Horse Poppy Parade

All the ponies and guests stood for 2 minutes silence to remember the war horses in the 1914-1918 war, followed by the bugle call, Sunset, which would have been heard in the military horse lines at the end of each day.

At the end of the Great War, when the guns fell silent 100 years ago, many soldiers simply walked home as there was no time to organise transport. So, we looked out over the North Downs to the coast to symbolise looking for those returning soldiers. Then we took a long walk home with the ponies, as the returning soldiers would have done, to conclude our War Horse Poppy Parade.

During the war the soldiers far from home found comfort in the quiet bond they shared with their noble war horses.

Remembering the War Horses

This weekend we will be Remembering the War Horses as part of the commemorations to mark 100 years after the end of the Great War 1914-1918.

Over half a million horses were requisitioned from the UK.  They were farm horses used to pull military equipment and riding horses used for the Cavalry.

Horses came from other countries too: from Russia; Australia and South Africa. Incredibly over 8 million horses took part in World War One.

Remembering the War Horses

The War Horses were all cared for daily by soldiers and the partnerships that formed between them were of great comfort during the tough war years.

Behind the scenes of the Face of Amazon Pets Video

This week we go behind the scenes of the Face of Amazon Pets Video.  We find out how Shetland pony Crème Brulee’s adorable video was made at Shetland Pony Club.

Behind the scenes with a Shetland pony

First Crème Brulee had to be shampooed and cleaned to make him look lovely.  That gorgeous flaxen mane needed to be silky and smooth, so lots of work was needed to get him ready.

Next the professional pet photographer Rachel Oates arrived.  She had a long list of photos to take and Crème Brulee and his friends had to pose in lots of different locations with Maddie.

Then the film crew shot the video.  It took lots of takes to get the perfect shots of Crème Brulee.  For most of them he had to perform remotely, so his natural horsemanship training came in handy.

Our filming day was an amazing experience for our Instagram star, Crème Brulee, Maddie and the team at Shetland Pony Club.  What a great treat to become the 2018 Face of Amazon Pets.

On the judging panel were a number of influential media stars of the pet world including Strictly Come Dancing’s star Ashley Roberts, owner of Cooper the Maltese dog.

Face of Amazon Pets

Well done Crème Brulee and thank you to Maddie for entering Crème Brulee and all those people who voted for him.

Shetland ponies try ice lollies!

Do Shetland ponies like ice lollies?

We recently went to a care home with our Shetland ponies on a very hot day.

The ponies were given some ice lollies as a thank you for visiting.  We were not sure if they would like them.

What do you think?

Shetland Pony Chill Out!

It’s way too hot at the ranch – 34 degrees is very hot for England – time for a Shetland pony chill out at the river.

Come and enjoy our Shetland pony paddling with the children and ponies.

Shetland pony chill out!

Shetland ponies are bred to live in the very cold conditions of the Shetland Islands, so they have been finding the recent heatwave quite hot.  They really enjoy a Shetland pony chill out at the river.  All the ponies react differently to the cool water.

What does Crème Caramel love doing in the river?

Learning to horse whisper with Shetland Ponies

This week we join Rosemary and Tom as they are learning to horse whisper with Shetland Ponies Robin Hood and Crème Caramel.

Horse whispering is a way of working naturally with horses. It trains people in equine behavior and how to work well together with their ponies.

Our mission at Shetland Pony Club is to support more parents and children around the world to start horse riding and to connect with ponies and nature, so horse whispering is the perfect way to train our ponies.

Find out where they go to on their horse whispering adventure?

Do they like being in the round pen?

Find out if Shetland ponies like Starlings

Find out if Shetland ponies like Starlings in this week’s episode of Shetland Pony Club TV.

Starlings used to be very common birds in the UK but since the 1970’s their numbers have declined.  We think it’s lovely to see a large group of these birds – known as a murmuration – at the ranch.

Shetland Pony Club is a Charter member of Children and Nature Network and we love to share a little of the natural world with families, when children come to ride our Shetland ponies at the ranch.

Where do they nest?

With so many Starlings at the ranch, there must be a bird’s nest somewhere?  Watch to see Rosemary as she finds a nest.  Are there Starling chicks in it or have they fledged and flown away from the nest?

Do the Shetland ponies like the Starlings?

The Starlings are extremely noisy all around the ponies.  What do they think of them – do they mind?

Royal wedding live at the Ranch and Windsor

Royal wedding live at the Ranch and Windsor

Join us for the Royal wedding celebrations at the Ranch and at Windsor where Liz had a close-up view of the carriage procession. What an atmosphere and such a perfect happy day.

Royal wedding pony fun

We had a weekend of pony fun at Shetland Pony Club – getting into the spirit of the Royal wedding with flags for Meghan and Harry and even tiaras for the ponies.  We had special rosettes and bunting made in purple and gold – the Queen’s racing colours.  The ponies dressed up in flags and we took lots of photos too.

Watch the video to see how well behaved our ponies were with all the dressing up, photos and excitement.

The real Royal wedding procession

Take a look at the Royal wedding procession up close with Liz.  Listen to the crowd and soak up the atmosphere.  See how good the horses in the procession were at coping with all that flag waving and noise.

Were all the royal procession horses well behaved?

Shetland ponies get ready for the Royal wedding

This week we watch the Shetland ponies get ready for the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.  Watch them try on flags to see if they would be good on parade, as we get ready for our own Royal wedding celebrations at The Ranch.

Royal wedding horses

We went to see the actual horses that will be in the Royal wedding parade as they practiced for their big day at the Royal Windsor Horse Show last week. See how shiny the horses are and how calm they are with crowds and noise.  The Horse Guards and the Life Guards and their horses will be on parade as well as the Mounted Band of The Household Cavalry. See them performing in this weeks’ film.

Do you think it would be easy to play a musical instrument and ride a horse at the same time?

How do the drummers on the drum horses steer their horses?

Let’s hope they are on their best behaviour for the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday!

Shetland ponies explore the bluebell woods

Shetland ponies explore the bluebell woods

This week we join the Shetland ponies as they explore the bluebell woods at Shetland Pony Club. Our native bluebells have a wonderful scent – yet the Shetland ponies don’t eat them.

Bluebells grow naturally in woodlands in the British Isles.  They love the dappled shade and flower in late April and early May.

Can you see the ponies treading carefully on the path through the bluebell woods so that they protect the beautiful blue carpet of flowers?

The ponies love visiting the beautiful woods.  What do they find there?

Shetland Ponies get the Munchies

Shetland Ponies get the Munchies at the ranch this week.  Elgin Sunset is trying to have a quiet snack, on his own.

He has some special medicine that he has in his feed.  The medicine helps older ponies like Elgin to lose their winter coat when the spring comes. He needs to do this, so that he does not get too hot in the summer time.  This is known as Cushing’s disease and it’s very common in older ponies.

More Shetland Ponies get the Munchies

Oh no – the other Shetland ponies have spotted him. They and have got the munchies and want to join in with his special feed.

Can you see which ponies are most keen to share his snack? Do they succeed or does Elgin finish before they can join in.

Pony Advice Guide: headcollars and bridles

Pony Advice Guide: headcollars and bridles

Find out the difference between headcollars and bridles

Our Shetland Ponies have headcollars and bridles, but what’s the difference?  Find out how they use them and how to get ready to go riding.

Head collars

These are used to catch a pony.  They are easy to put on, with just a nose band and a strap over the head with one buckle to fasten.  Headcollars can be made of webbing, leather or rope.  You can attach a lead rope to them and they are ideal for leading ponies and for tying them up.

Bridles

Bridles are used when riding a pony.

They usually have a metal “bit” that fits into the pony’s mouth.  This helps to control the pony when he is being ridden. Reins attach to the bit. We must be gentle with the reins so we do not damage the pony’s mouth.

Bridles can be tricky to put on to a pony.  We need to take care not to hurt his eyes or ears and to carefully tuck his hair away from the straps.

An expert will fit the bridle to the pony for the first time to make sure that it is really comfortable for him.

The Shetland ponies are back to work and the farriers are in the field.  The farriers are the people who look after the ponies’ feet.  They are highly skilled.  It takes 5 years to learn how to become a farrier.

Shetland Pony Survival in the Snow

Shetland Pony Survival in the Snow

What are the Shetland Pony Survival issues in the prolonged snowy weather?

It’s been minus 10 degrees for several days.  The winter wind the “Beast from the East” has an icy grip on the ranch. This means the water tanks are frozen and the Shetland ponies need help to survive.

Rosemary to the rescue!

Even though there is snow on the ground, our ponies are now eating hay, which is much drier than the grass hidden beneath the snow.  So, we must give every pony water to make sure that he does not get dehydrated.  It’s best to give the ponies small amounts of water, frequently and to make sure that it is slightly warm, to stop them catching a chill.

Join Rosemary as she takes water to the Shetlands at the snowbound ranch.

Shetland ponies and the Beast from the East

Shetland ponies and the Beast from the East

There is snow at Shetland Pony Club, so how do our Shetland ponies cope with the Beast from the East?  That’s the name given to the extreme cold conditions that are affecting the UK this week.  There’s an easterly wind coming from Siberia which is making our weather much colder than usual.

Do the Shetland ponies mind?

Watch the video to see how Hector Moonbeam, Sundance and Nottingham are getting on at the ranch in the icy wind:

  • They have hay in case the grass gets completely covered with snow.
  • Rosemary breaks the ice on the water troughs every morning and night to make sure that the ponies can drink when they need to.

Are the Shetland ponies happier in the cold or in warm weather?

Winter Watch at Shetland Pony Club

Join Rosemary on Winter Watch at Shetland Pony Club this week.

It’s really cold at the ranch and Rosemary is checking on the Shetland ponies in the cold winter sunshine to make sure that all the ponies are healthy.

Frosted grass can lead to tummy aches for the Shetland ponies so they need to be watched carefully. Join Rosemary on her daily pony check and see what’s happening on the ponies’ winter holiday.

Rosemary has another important job to do to look after the ponies.  She must break the ice on their water trough and remove the broken pieces to prevent them freezing over.  Ponies cannot break the ice themselves so it’s important to do this every day in freezing weather to make sure that they always have water to drink.

The ponies are not the only animals to be enjoying the morning sunshine. What other wildlife are also wintering at the ranch?

Open wide for the pony dentist

Find out what happens when the pony dentist visits Shetland Pony Club

Did you know that horses and ponies need to go to the pony dentist?  Well a pony needs to look after his teeth in the same way as we do.

Ponies eat tough grasses which can wear down their teeth quickly.  So, they cope with this by having teeth that grow throughout their lives. This means that their teeth don’t wear away and ponies can always manage to eat and grind up tough grasses and digest them.

Sometimes ponies’ teeth do not wear down evenly and the pony dentist can check their teeth to make sure that they can eat easily.

The good news for the Shetland ponies is that the pony dentist comes to them.

He keeps a record of their teeth so that he can see any changes over time and make sure that the Shetland ponies stay healthy.

Do the Shetlands like the pony dentist’s visit?  Does it hurt them?

Booking your child’s first pony ride

Shetland Pony Advice Guides

You are thinking of booking your child’s first pony ride? How exciting! Whether it’s for a special treat, or something you’d like to continue, we can help your child start riding in the beautiful English countryside.
Watch the video to find out more:

This is the first of our series of Pony Advice Guides to help you learn all about ponies and riding for your child, so that you can enjoy a wonderful time with ponies.

Booking your child’s first pony ride

When booking your child’s first pony ride, it can be tricky to know how to go about it.  You want your child to try riding and learn to care for ponies.  You instinctively know that there can be a special bond between a pony and a child.  It would be great to get them outside in the countryside and to try something new. But…what should I book?  What should my child wear? Do I need a riding hat? Which pony is suitable for my child?

We will help you answer all these concerns.

At Shetland Pony Club, we have helped over 8,000 children start riding safely. We will help find the perfect pony for your child to have a great start with ponies.

Starting out with ponies at Shetland Pony Club

What’s best to book at Shetland Pony Club?

Starter Rides – are 45 minutes long and a specially designed first riding experiences for children from age 2½ – 10 years old. They cost £39 per child.

They are a gentle introduction to pony riding with a helper. Starter rides include brushing and getting your pony ready to ride. Children have a gentle ride with a leader in our meadows for about 20 minutes. They help with pony care and finish with a pony ride certificate.

Pony Mornings – are 2 hours long and are specially designed as early riding experiences for children from age 4 – 10 years old. They cost £49 per child.

Children meet and greet the ponies with a helper and learn to brush them. Then it’s time to get them ready and learn to lead their pony. Next, they enjoy an easy ride in our meadows with a leader, that is confidence boosting and fun. After a break, it’s time to try some pony learning such as tack cleaning or clearing up the paddock, which they love! Pony mornings are a really special all round pony experience and children are given a rosette as a memento of their special morning.

Riding in the Bluebells at Shetland Pony Club

Pony advice – costs to start with ponies

5 Simple ways to start with ponies that are easy on the pocket

Pony advice – costs: we asked parents what’s the number one worry they have when starting out with ponies:

It’s COST

At Shetland Pony Club, we we’ve helped over 7,000 children begin pony riding. You reminded us that the benefits of riding are far reaching. It not only gives children the skill of riding; it teaches them responsibility, gives them confidence, gets them outside and is huge fun. It’s also very rewarding and enjoyable for parents too. But, the costs can be daunting.

So, here’s 5 simple ways that you can start out with ponies for your children that are easy on your pocket.

  1. Pony toys, clothes and gamesPony toys at Shetland Pony Club

Children connect with pony toys, clothes and games from an early age. You will buy them toys anyway so choosing horse toys, stables and games is a great start.

· Do they play with them regularly?

· Do they ask for a pony toy or top when you go shopping?

This is an excellent way to see how keen they are on ponies, or if it’s just a fad and next week it’s dinosaurs…

Find out the other 4 simple ways that you can start out with ponies for your children that are easy on your pocket.
