Our Jubilee Shetland Pony Street Party

Last weekend we had our very own special Jubilee Shetland Pony Street Party!

The ponies are all dressed up in their Union Jack flags, Jubilee sashes and their little tiaras and crowns.

Can you see what special outfit Tintin is wearing for the celebrations?

In London the Trooping of the Colour Parade is under way, and in honour of The Queen we have our very own Pony Parade too. The skies were clear at The Ranch and we saw the aeroplanes that took part in the fly pass from London.

We had fun photos under the Jubilee arch and in the special photo frame. Can you see Prince William posing?

After the parade and photos, it’s time for party tea. We had lots of yummy cakes, sandwiches, and muffins. Everyone joined in and had so much fun. We think The Queen would’ve approved of our Pony Street Party!

Visit to the Queen’s Highland Ponies at Balmoral

In this special episode for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we are going to look at a trip I took to the Queen’s private estate at Balmoral to see her Highland Ponies!

Highland Ponies are native to the Highlands of Scotland, they like Shetlands but bigger. The Queen breeds them on her estate in Balmoral. I spent a day with the Stud Manager and we had lots of jobs to do.

  • First we had to give the ponies some hay
  • Then we had to fed the stallions, male ponies, a special feed

We drove around the Balmoral Estate; can you see what other animals I saw?

We then visited the mothers with their foals, they were adorable! Highland ponies are quite rare, so the Stud plays an important role in protecting them. The mothers’ give the foals milk to drink and then they learn to eat hay and grass. As the foals grow up, they are used for:

  • Riding
  • Transporting things around the hilly estate

It was such a special treat to see all the wonderful Highland Ponies. Thank you to HM The Queen for taking excellent care of her native breeds.

The Queen at the Royal Windsor Horse Show

This week Rosemary saw the Queen at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. It’s the Queen’s favourite horse show and she has attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show every year since 1943.

Watch the video to find out which ponies and horses Rosemary saw at the show:

The Fell pony, they are like Shetlands although larger.  It’s a special year for the Fell pony as it was the centenary of the Fell Society. They were invited to partake in a special parade at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Queen was photographed earlier this year with her two lovely Fell ponies to commemorate her Platinum Jubilee.

The Shetland Pony Grand National. Which we love, it’s special for us as our pony Gordon raced at Windsor in front of the Queen years ago!

Join us for Jubilee fun over half term!

To celebrate we are putting on special Jubilee fun pony rides along our Jubilee Trail around our beautiful meadows. Pony dress-up, followed by the opportunity to take photos of your child at our Platinum Jubilee Arch. Commemorative rosette and certificate included.

Our new Shetland Pony Bilbo settles in

Join Rosemary in this week’s video to see how our new Shetland Pony Bilbo settles in.

When a new pony arrives at Shetland Pony Club we take great care to ensure they are introduced safely to the rest of the Shetlands, as some of the ponies can get jealous. We have over 20 ponies at The Ranch and they are all so excited to meet Bilbo. However, it takes a long time to introduce them all, over three weeks Rosemary will introduce one pony a day.

Find out if Bilbo makes friends:

  • We started off by introducing Elgin Sunset, an older pony, who doesn’t take any notice of young Bilbo.
  • Snowy and Toffee however want to play with Bilbo, you can see them racing around the field together having fun. Who is the fastest?
  • After 3 weeks of meeting lots of new friends, Bilbo looks settled and happy. Can you see which pony he is rubbing at the end of the video?

Find out more about Bilbo here.

How to have a well-behaved Shetland Pony

Join Rosemary in this week’s video to learn how to have a well-behaved Shetland Pony.

People are often amazed how well-behaved our ponies are. It’s important that we have suitable ponies for children so they can have a safe and enjoyable time. Here are Rosemary’s top tips on how to have a well-behaved pony:

  • Do not overfeed
  • Regular exercise
  • Suitable companions in their field, so they feel safe and happy in the herd
  • Lots of rest and sleep between work
  • Kindness, gentleness, and patience, to take the time to teach him properly what you want him to do
  • If your pony is not behaving well, he may be uncomfortable and may need to see the Vet or Equine dentist

The History of Shetland Ponies

Join Rosemary in this week’s video all about the History of Shetland Ponies.

  • Shetland ponies originate from the Shetland Islands, 120 miles off the north of Scotland in the North Sea. Only the very hardiest and toughest Shetlands survived the harsh conditions.
  • Farmers used Shetlands to carry peat from the hills back to the farmhouse to use as fuel. As there are no trees on the Shetland Islands to use as fuel.
  • In 1840 Shetland ponies started to be used in coal mines, as they were small but very strong and able to pull the coal carts. Shetlands were transported all over the world including America to work in the mines.
  • Happily now Shetland ponies are not used in mines but enjoy riding with children!

The ponies and all the staff are happy to be out riding again.

Our Shetland ponies in Storm Eunice

Join Rosemary in this week’s video, our Shetland ponies in Storm Eunice.

Last week the UK was hit by Storm Eunice, with winds up to 90mph. Thankfully all the Shetlands are safe and well, albeit a little windswept. The only damage we had was our large Ash tree that fell in the winds, this was sad as the Shetlands loved standing under it all year round.

Watch the latest video to find out what precautions Rosemary took to ensure the ponies’ safety by:

  • Moving the ponies into the Rewilding field where there are no trees to fall over
  • The Rewilding field has lots of bramble bushes that the ponies can shelter behind
  • Keeping the Shetlands outdoors not in a stable as the high winds would have made this dangerous.

How strong are Shetland ponies?

Join Rosemary in this week’s advice video as she answers your question, how strong are Shetland ponies?

We often get asked the question how do the Shetlands manage to carry the children when they are so small? Our Shetlands range in size from 32 inches- 42 inches, from the ground to the top of their withers, so they are very small indeed. However, they are very strong in proportion to their size.

Shetlands are strong because:

  • Their lower legs have strong, stocky, and thick cannon bones (the bone between the hoof and the knee)
  • They have a wide chest and their heart is big and strong
  • They have a muscular neck, compact body, and short back

Fun Facts:

  • Shetlands can pull twice their body weight compared to a large horse that can pull only half his body weight
  • A child on a Shetlands back is the equivalent to us carrying a large handbag
  • Our larger ponies can carry weight up to 7 stone

Do Shetland ponies need a stable?

Join Rosemary in this week’s advice video as she answers your question, do Shetland ponies need a stable?

Our ponies live outside all year round. This is called keeping a pony at ‘grass’. So, how do the ponies manage without a stable?

  • Shetlands prefer living outside with lots of open space and in a herd with friends to feel safe
  • They have adapted to outdoor life in the wild with a big tail, mane and fluffy coat to keep them warm
  • They find natural shelter in the field behind bushes and trees
  • We do have an emergency stable if the Shetlands need to see a vet

Do Shetland ponies need horseshoes?

Join Rosemary in this week’s advice video as she answers your question, do Shetland ponies need horseshoes?

Our ponies don’t generally need horseshoes, this is called having a ‘barefoot pony’. It’s something that is becoming increasingly popular in the horsey world.

Why don’t our Shetland ponies need horseshoes?

  • Shetland ponies have good strong, sturdy hooves that don’t often crack
  • The children who ride are lightweight and don’t put pressure on the pony’s hooves
  • The ground that we ride on is soft and doesn’t have stones

Are Shetland ponies expensive to keep?

Join Rosemary in this week’s video as she answers your question, are Shetlands expensive to keep?

We often get asked the question if it’s cheaper to keep a Shetland pony rather than a bigger horse, as Shetlands are much smaller. Rosemary explains what you need to keep a Shetland pony happy and if it’s expensive to keep one.

What do I need to keep a Shetland and are they expensive to keep?

Rosemary explores what you would need to keep a Shetland and if it is any cheaper than keeping a bigger horse. To keep a Shetland you need:

  • A grass field with at least one acre
  • Shelter or a stable
  • Hard feed and hay
  • Farrier, to keep your ponies hooves trimmed
  • Vet in case there are any health issues
  • Saddles and bridles for riding

Are Shetland ponies naughty?

Join Rosemary in this week’s video as she answers your question, are Shetland ponies naughty?

Rosemary explains why Shetland ponies are often misunderstood and are actually well behaved when looked after properly. Shetland ponies need as much training, care, love, and attention as a big horse does. Shetlands are often left in a field for a long time and not exercised enough. When ridden infrequently they can have a reputation for being ‘naughty’, when they simply don’t understand what is being asked of them.

What helps a Shetland pony to not be naughty?

  • Companionship: Shetlands are herd animals and like having lots of friends to play with in the field.
  • Good feeding: this is often a big challenge for an owner as Shetlands are so small they can be overfed. It’s a real skill to make sure they have enough food to keep them healthy and fit but not too much that they are overfed.
  • Exercise: Shetlands need regular riding and exercise to help with their training. Shetlands ponies often don’t get enough exercise because they are so small and no one is able to ride them. We are lucky at Shetland Pony Club that we have lots of children to ride our ponies, to keep them fit and healthy.

Why are Shetland Ponies so small?

Join Rosemary in our latest pony advice video, which answers your frequently asked questions about our ponies. This week Rosemary answers your question – why are Shetland ponies so small?  Watch the video to find out more.

In this week’s video you’ll find out:

Why are Shetland ponies so small?

Shetland ponies originate from the Shetland Isles, where there are no trees for shelter and the weather is wet, cold, and windy. Being small means that Shetland ponies are able to adapt and survive the harsh conditions.

Are our Shetlands fully grown?

Yes, our ponies are fully grown, many people think they are babies or foals however most of our Shetlands are teenagers now. We don’t have any young foals or young stock at Shetland Pony Club.

How to measure a Shetland pony?

Shetland ponies are measured from the ground to the top of their wither. You measure them in inches. This is different from other horses or ponies who are normally measured in hands. Our smallest pony, Snowdrop, is only 32 inches high! Balmoral and Mufasa are our biggest ponies at 42 inches high.

Review of 2021 at Shetland Pony Club.

After a long period of lockdown from November 2020 we were delighted to start riding again at The Ranch in March 2021. Despite the challenges of this year we managed to have lots of pony fun and riding. We were thrilled to be able to go ahead with our legendary Easter Egg Hunts, Summer Camps and Halloween Pumpkin Rides. Watch the video to find out more!

As you watch this year’s review video can you answer these questions:

What happened on the opening day at The Ranch?

We had a cold surprise on our opening day at The Ranch but that didn’t stop us or the ponies from riding. The ponies still had their warm, fluffy coats and were ready for any weather.

How many new ponies arrived this year?

We’ve had some new pony additions to Shetland pony Club this year, including Trooper who travelled all the way from the Shetland Isles.

What did the farmer plant to cheer everyone up?

As well as our amazing wildflower meadows, we were lucky to also have some new, bright and cheery flowers at The Ranch this year. Can you guess what flowers they were?

How to care for Shetland ponies in Storm Arwen

Join Rosemary as she shows us how to care for Shetland ponies in Storm Arwen, the first named storm of the winter.

Can Shetland ponies live outside all year round?

Shetland ponies are bred to survive in the harsh conditions of the Shetland Islands, where there are no trees for shelter and the weather is wet, cold and windy. They can live outside all year round as they have thick coats and fluffy tails to protect them.

How do we keep the Shetland ponies safe in a storm?

The Shetland ponies are best kept outside, in a large field where there is natural shelter to protect them. They feel safer outside with their friends, where they can be together and find shelter, rather than being alone in a stable.

Which field is best for the Shetland ponies in Storm Arwen

Rosemary has taken a close look at the wind direction and is moving the ponies to another field. She has chosen a field where there is the most shelter from the storm. Do they think it’s a good idea to change fields?

Shetland Pony Share Membership makes dreams come true

Shetland Pony Share Membership is the ideal way to enjoy all the fun of owning a pony, without the worries. It’s a great way to start, so let’s find out all about both options.

What is involved in owning your own pony?

First, you need to find a suitable pony for your child. This can be tricky, and you need to be experienced with horses to choose the right pony. Making the wrong choice can be an expensive mistake.

How to look after your pony

You will need to find a place for him to live, where he can be happy. Then, there’s lots to do to care for him for example regular visits from the farrier. He will also need to be seen by the vet and horse dentist and you need to keep his weight in check. He must be looked after every day of the year, come rain or shine, Christmas or holidays, so it’s a big commitment.

Shetland Pony Share Membership makes dreams come true

A great way to start out with ponies is to become a Shetland Pony Share Member, so you can have all the fun, without the daily responsibilities and worries.

There are two types of Pony Share Membership to enjoy from March – November:

  • Pony Membership – a pony of your own each week, 2 hours, from age 4+
  • Mini Membership – a pony of your own each week, 45 minutes, from age 4+* (*Covid age restriction)

The video explains how Shetland Pony Share Membership works, so do take a moment to watch it.

How can I become a Pony Share Member?

Membership is very popular, so we have a waiting list of children hoping to ride each week with us in 2022. There is still just time to join the waiting list here.

The waiting list closes on Monday 29 November 2021, and then it’s time to choose the ponies for the children on our waiting list for next year.

A pony for Christmas!

Each new pony share member receives a special pony pack in time to give them “a pony for Christmas”, with riding from March – November 2022.

New Shetland pony Trooper arrives at Shetland Pony Club – Part 5

Our new Shetland pony Trooper has arrived at Shetland Pony Club after isolation. Find out how he gets on meeting his new friends.

New Shetland pony Trooper arrives at Shetland Pony Club

When a new pony comes to Shetland Pony Club he has to isolate for a while to make sure that he is fit and healthy.  He also needs to have his flu and tetanus vaccinations, just like us.

Time to meet new friends

Once he is ready, Trooper comes to meet the other ponies at Shetland Pony Club.  At first, he just says hello across the fence, and gets to know Fudge and the standard Shetland ponies. He also spends some time in the Ranch, getting to know his new surroundings.

Do Trooper and Balmoral know each other?

Balmoral seems to be taking a special interest in saying hello to Trooper.  Both ponies came from the same stud on the Shetland Islands, so we wonder if they have met before? Trooper spends the night in the field next door, but it’s rather stormy. He seems fine – perhaps he is used to stormy weather.

Who will be Trooper’s friend?

The mini Shetland ponies also say hello to Trooper. Who will be his best friend?  Will it be Batman, or Robin Hood?

Looking for a new Shetland pony on the Shetland Isles – Part 3

In our search so far, we have found some Shetland ponies that are too big and too small, seen some cheeky puffins and some Viking longships, but not many Shetland ponies yet.

Looking for a new pony on the Shetland Isles

We know that one of our Shetland ponies, Balmoral, was born on the Shetland Island of Yell. His owner has now moved so we go in search of her to see if she has any more ponies that might be perfect for Shetland Pony Club.

Peat bogs but no ponies

The landscape is very beautiful, but windy too. We see some peat that has been cut and is drying. It’s a traditional fuel for homes that is still used occasionally, and Shetland ponies were used to carry it off the moors. I’m heading for a place called “the Cake Fridge”. It sounds an unlikely place to find a Shetland pony…

Looking for a new Shetland pony on the Shetland Isles – Part 2

Last week, we found some Shetland pony stallions that were too big for us and some foals that were too small. So this week we visit Shetland ponies on Bressay, another island, to try and find the perfect Shetland pony for us.

Shetland ponies on Bressay

Bressay is a short ferry ride from the Shetland Mainland. It is famous because there is a special Pictish Stone there called the Bressay Stone. It is carved with a Shetland pony being ridden by a Viking. So Shetland ponies are thought to have travelled to Shetland on Viking longships.

Grassy pastures are ideal for breeding Shetland ponies

The Marquis of Londonderry used the rich grasses on Bressay to breed many Shetland ponies to be used in coal mines around the world. They travelled by boat too, but they are not here now, so we need to look elsewhere.

Burra and the Shetland Pony Experience

The Merkisayre Stud on the Island of Burra has many wonderful ponies and the most adorable mares and foals. So do they have the perfect Shetland pony for us?

Looking for a new Shetland pony on the Shetland Isles – Part 1

It’s been a busy summer at the Ranch and we are looking for a new Shetland pony to join our team. Where better to look than the Shetland Isles?

Getting to the Shetland Isles

These famous islands are 120 miles north of Scotland and you have to take an overnight ferry or fly there from Aberdeen. The weather is often windy and wet on Shetland.

Which animals can we see?

Shetland ponies live all over the Shetland Isles, so will we see some suitable ponies when we arrive?  Gosh, there’s lots of amazing wildlife to see: puffins; otters and something else too, but no Shetland ponies so far…

Lone Shetland pony

We finally see a lone Shetland pony on a hillside.  Will he be the one for us? Find out if this gorgeous pony is a good choice for our children.

Learn how to ride a Shetland pony

Always wanted your child to learn how to ride a Shetland Pony? Find out how to begin riding with a Starter Ride, in this week’s advice video from Shetland Pony Club.

Learn how to ride a Shetland pony

At Shetland Pony Club, we have helped more than 12,000 children begin riding.  With a relaxed, gentle approach, children develop a love of ponies that will last a lifetime. Many children who first rode with us are now grown up and have gone on to have their own ponies, compete at top level, become vets or come back to help more children start riding with us.

How do I begin riding?

The best way to start riding is by trying a Starter ride. Children aged 4-10 years, put on a riding hat, and learn how to be safe around ponies. They begin by meeting their pony and brushing him. A gentle, hands-on approach works well and our young riders love to choose their saddle and help to get their pony ready for riding.

Shetland ponies lead the way

Shetland ponies are ideal to start on, as they are small and the children learn to lead them before getting on. Each child enjoys a relaxed ride on their pony around our meadows, being led by their helper. They get plenty of time to get used to riding, and there’s a chance for parents to take photos at the end.

Children help with pony care

It’s important to look after our pony before ourselves, so the children make sure he is untacked after his ride and offer him a drink of water. They love the responsibility of caring for him. Once the pony care is over it’s time for more hand washing and a reward…

10 Shetland ponies eat a tasty breakfast

This week we join Rosemary at The Ranch where the Shetland ponies are all looking forward to a tasty breakfast.

10 Shetland ponies eat a tasty breakfast

All the Shetland ponies love eating their delicious pony feed, and are keen to come in from the field to eat it. They can hear the sound of the feed being prepared and they can’t wait to eat a tasty breakfast.

The larger standard Shetland ponies have a bigger breakfast to give them lots of energy for their busy camp day ahead. They also have more grass in their paddock, as they need to eat more to keep them in good condition.

Can you name 10 of our Shetland ponies?

As they come in, Rosemary names 10 of the Shetland ponies.  Can you spot them all and tell the differences between them?

What do Shetland ponies eat?

What do Shetland ponies eat, is a great question that we find the answer to in this week’s Shetland Pony Club advice video.

What do Shetland ponies eat?

The main part of a Shetland pony’s diet is grass. He eats for as long as 16 hours per day, so can eat lots more grass than you might have in your garden.

Ponies like a varied diet

Just like us, ponies like to eat a range of foods. They are especially fond of milk thistles in summer and eat prickly common thistles in winter. They also enjoy other spikey plants such as blackberries, both the fruits and leaves, in the autumn.

Winter feeding of Shetland ponies

When it’s cold, the grass stops growing and ponies may need to be fed hay, which is dried grass, as a supplement to their normal grazing. They may need an additional small feed when they are being ridden regularly, to give them energy.  Our ponies at Shetland Pony Club have a feed each morning when they are being ridden by children.

Nutritious and delicious

Ponies also need to eat a range of minerals and vitamins.  On the Shetland Isles the ponies eat seaweed on the beaches, which is full of nutrients and salt.  At Shetland Pony Club in Surrey, we don’t have seaweed, but the ponies enjoy a salt lick to get their extra minerals.

Join our Shetland pony ride to the sunflower fields

Come and join our Shetland pony ride to the sunflower fields in this week’s delightful video from Shetland Pony Club.

Shetland pony ride to the sunflower fields

It’s a busy day and the Shetland ponies need a good breakfast to get them ready to take the children riding to the sunflower fields.

Gorgeous sunflower fields

The sunflowers have been planted all around the barley field. They are so tall that the children and Shetland ponies can’t see over them.  Toffee really enjoys riding alongside them, but Dreamcoat is keen to stop for a snack.

Perfect for bees and butterflies

The sunflowers look wonderful and provide lots of food for bees and butterflies to eat. It’s wonderful to enjoy riding amongst the sunflowers with the ponies.

It’s the summer holidays and Shetland Pony Club is in full swing with pony staycation summer fun.  Let’s find out all the great things that are going on with the Shetland ponies in this week’s video.

Enjoy Shetland pony staycation summer fun

Children are enjoying the ultimate Shetland pony staycation with our Summer Pony Camp Days. They come for a full day and enjoy having their own pony and helper, all day long. There’s so much to do, and every day is themed with fun activities such as Polo Day, Vet’s Day, Nature Day where children learn Natural Horsemanship and all about ponies in nature and our legendary Pony Paddling Days. Children from age 5-10 can join the waiting list for Summer Pony Camp Day fun.

Own a Pony Experiences

Children can make their summer pony staycation memories with a 2 hour Own a Pony Experience, where they get to enjoy their own pony, with a helper, riding and learning how to care for him too. Children age 4+ learn a variety of pony skills, from hoof picking to tack cleaning, paddock care to pony bathing as well as grooming, saddling and riding.

Starter Rides

For the perfect Shetland Pony Staycation for aspiring children new to riding, Starter Rides are the perfect introduction to pony fun.  Children aged 4+ help to groom and saddle their ponies, lead them and ride them, with their very own helper alongside. They can give their pony a drink and finish with a lovely certificate with which to remember the day.

Restful staycation for parents too

Parents often say that the best thing about Shetland Pony Club is that we take care of the children and ponies, so you can enjoy our beautiful Surrey Hills countryside, the free coffee, and you can take pictures of your child on the cutest Shetland pony too. They like our COVID – secure procedures and the acres of gorgeous outdoor space for spectators to enjoy.

How can I book a staycation pony treat?

Shetland Pony Club is incredibly popular and we get very busy. However, with plans changing daily we do get extra availability at short notice.  So do check the live booking system on our website frequently for extra availability, or contact the office on 07734 950309 or info@shetlandponyclub.co.uk

Is a garden ok for keeping a Shetland pony?

In this week’s pony advice video, Rosemary answers one of your frequently asked questions: is a garden ok for keeping a Shetland pony?  Shetland ponies are so small that it might be possible – let’s find out more.

How much space do you need to keep a Shetland pony?

It’s actually a lot of space, about one acre of land is needed to keep a Shetland pony, that’s over 4,000 square metres and is a bigger space than most gardens.

What does a Shetland pony eat?

Shetland ponies love grass, but the grass on your lawn may have too much sugar in it for horses. It’s better to feed them on longer coarse grass which is less rich. Ponies may need hay in the winter, which is quite messy in a garden and it can get muddy in the place where you feed him. Shetland ponies will also eat your roses, fruit and flowers, which might get them into trouble!

Will a Shetland pony damage my lawn?

Yes, Shetland ponies’ hooves, even if unshod, will damage your lawn surface over time. They can create mud and break down the edges of your lawn too. They also like to roll and play, and this can damage the plants.

Does a Shetland pony need shelter?

Yes, this is more often to provide shade in the summer, rather than protection from the cold in the winter. A stable is good, but a shady tree is also a great natural place for a pony to shelter.

Will a Shetland pony fertilise my garden?

Shetland ponies do up to 6 poops a day, so that’s a lot of clearing up to do.  The poop can be great as a garden fertiliser, as long as it’s in the right place. However, if he spends a penny on your lawn, this can burn the grass.

So, is a garden ok for keeping a Shetland pony?

As the video explains, he will be much happier in a field where he has the right grass, space and can enjoy himself with his friends.

What do Shetland ponies eat in a day?

What do Shetland ponies eat in a day? Let’s find out with Rosemary as she shows us how to look after the ponies at Shetland Pony Club to keep them happy and healthy.

What do Shetland ponies eat in a day?

Just like us, Shetland ponies need a good breakfast early in the morning to give them plenty of energy for their busy day ahead. They love their tasty breakfast and are keen to come in and eat it in The Ranch, every morning.

Tasty breakfast

The Shetland ponies have a very small amount of Balanced Horse Feeds Show Mix, which is a delicious mixture of pony nuts and chopped chaff. It gives them enough energy to be well behaved for their mornings riding at Shetland Pony Club.

Lunchtime is important

The Shetland ponies need a proper lunchtime, with a full hour to eat grass and relax after their busy morning. They always have clean water to drink and enjoy a lick block of salt and minerals too.

Evening eating for the Shetland ponies

At the end of a busy day the ponies go into the rewilding fields where they browse on twigs, brambles and a range of native plants to vary their diet. They also get a treat of a little richer grass and herbs as a reward for a good day’s work.

Summer pony ride to the wildflower meadows

Join us this week as our Pony Share Members enjoy a summer pony ride to the wildflower meadows.

Getting ready for a summer pony ride

The Pony Share Members come every week to ride their special pony. Let’s join them as they pick out the hooves and tack up the ponies to get ready for riding.

Prince William is looking forward to his ride, and Dinky is happy to be on the way to find the wildflower meadows.

Over the hills and far away

The ponies head out across the Surrey Hills to find the wildflowers.  Once they come through the gate, there is a sea of flowers as high as the ponies’ eyes.

Wonderful wildflower meadows

The flowers stretch as far as the eye can see, and the ponies and their riders love to wind through the twisty paths, spotting butterflies along the route. What a lovely day!

Batman the Shetland pony gets new plastic shoes

With the very hard ground, Batman the Shetland pony has been struggling with sore feet.

Batman the Shetland pony gets new plastic shoes

Batman the Shetland pony has thin soles on his hooves, which bruise easily and the very hard ground has made his feet sore.

Bigger horses with sore feet can be shod with metal shoes that have pads on them to help protect their hooves, but Batman’s hooves are very small, making this difficult.

Special plastic shoes for Shetland ponies

Our farrier has found some special plastic shoes which are small enough for Shetland ponies. They have been approved in a university study and are glued onto his feet, rather than put on with nails.

The shoe with the perfect fit

The special plastic shoes fit Batman’s hooves perfectly. They have a special bar at the back to protect his heal, and a triangle under his hoof to support his frog and protect his sole.  They are very neat and you can hardly see them.

Very happy Shetland pony

Batman really likes his new shoes.  He feels so much more comfortable and can now go riding again, thanks to our farriers.

How to prepare a Shetland pony for a photo shoot

Let’s find out how to prepare a Shetland pony for a photo shoot in this weeks’ video from Shetland Pony Club.

When is the best time for a pony photo shoot?

When the weather improves, the Shetland ponies have their summer coats and the wildflower meadows are in bloom, it’s the perfect time for a Shetland pony photo shoot. Getting the perfect photo takes time and care, and the ponies need to look their best in the pictures.

How to prepare a Shetland pony for a photo shoot

The secret is to shampoo the ponies to make them look gorgeous. We have special pony friendly shampoo and warm water for the ponies to enjoy their beauty spa.

Honeybee has had his legs washed, Sundance has a beautiful shampooed tail and Crème Brulee has had his mane washed. The ponies that need the most preparation are the white ponies (known as grey because of their skin colour), Snowdrop and Tintin.

What is the secret to a perfectly prepared pony?

Getting a Shetland pony to look show shiny and his very best is not as easy as you might think. Find out what happens to Batman?

What does a Shetland pony weigh?

In this pony advice video we learn the answer to a much-asked question – what does a Shetland pony weigh?

How do you weigh a Shetland pony?

To find out the weight of our Shetland ponies, the most accurate way to do so is with a special pony weigh scales, which are like a big set of bathroom scales. We can stand our ponies on the scale and record how much they weigh.

Some of our ponies are very happy on the scales, like Dreamcoat, but some take more practice, as with Prince William.

What does a Shetland pony weigh?

  • A small or miniature Shetland pony, like Honeybee, Dinky and Snowdrop should weigh around 120 kg.
  • Midi Shetland ponies such as Toffee should weigh about 150kg.
  • Larger standard Shetland ponies, like Gordon and Teddy Bear should weigh about 180kg – 200kg.

Why does a Shetland pony’s weight matter?

For Shetland ponies to be happy and healthy with no sore feet, they should be the right weight for their size, so if they are a little heavy, they need to eat a bit less and exercise more.

Can you guess which of our ponies are the right weight, and which Shetlands are a little heavy?

This week you can join our happy Shetland pony trekking adventure as our Pony Share Members ride to the bluebell woods.

Shetland pony trekking

Our Pony Share Members are so happy to be out exploring with their ponies, with the ground now much softer and the birds singing, it’s the perfect day for a pony adventure.

Fairy woodland

The children all dismount to go over the rickety bridge to the woods – maybe there’s a troll underneath it? Then it’s back in the saddle to ride between the bluebells on the paths through the woodland. What a lovely scent the bluebells have!  Perhaps there are some fairies in the woodland too – let’s try and find them.

What a happy Shetland pony trekking adventure!

Pony Problems: Laminitis

In our latest Advice Guide from Shetland Pony Club we look at a pony problem called Laminitis.

Laminitis is a common condition in ponies, often caused by eating too much sugary grass. It causes the sensitive laminae in the feet to swell and become very sore.

How to recognize laminitis

  • Ponies with laminitis can’t walk very comfortably. You can check their feet to see if they are hot. It’s most common to have laminitis in the front feet, but it can be found in all four hooves.
  • They may also have a cresty neck, which feels hard and lumpy, and is a sign that they may be overweight.
  • Laminitic ponies may also sit or lie down more to take the weight off their sore feet.

Causes of laminitis

  • Rich grass in springtime can lead to laminitis
  • Frost induced laminitis can also happen in winter, with the temperature shock to the hooves and the sugary grass under the snow and frost
  • Concussion laminitis is caused when the ground is very hard

How to treat laminitis

There are lots of ways to help laminitic ponies with sore feet.

Ponies can be put in a stable with a deep bed of wood chips to make it more comfortable for their feet and stop them eating the sugary grass. They also like to stand on soft surfaces, like rubber mats, which cushion their hooves.

Vets recommend low sugar feeds and can make them more comfortable with pony anti-inflammatory medicine, to reduce the swelling that causes the pain inside the hooves. They can also x-ray the ponies’ hooves to see what’s happening inside.

The farriers can also help with frequent hoof trimming as their feet grow quickly.

Prevention is better than cure

Keeping ponies slim and well-exercised is the ideal way to help prevent laminitis. With careful management, they can recover and be happy and healthy again.

Spring pony ride to the Bluebell Wood

It’s time for our spring pony ride to the Bluebell Wood and the children are going on an adventure.

Spring pony ride

This spring has been the driest ever and the ground is very bumpy. The farm manager has kindly arrived to harrow out the rough patches and make the ground soft and smooth for the Shetland ponies to walk on.

Journey to the Bluebell Wood

Join us as we ride with the ponies and children on their spring pony ride to the Bluebell Wood. See how beautiful it looks and what a delightful scent there is from all the flowers. The ground is also soft in the Bluebell Wood, so it is ideal for pony riding.

Is the rain coming?

We really need rain this spring to soften the ground at Shetland Pony Club. Join the ponies on the way back to The Ranch and see if any rain comes their way?

How to keep Shetland ponies warm in winter

Find out how to keep Shetland ponies warm in winter in this week’s video from Shetland Pony Club.

Do Shetland ponies prefer the cold weather?

Shetland ponies come from the Shetland Islands which are 120 miles north of mainland Scotland in the North Sea.  The weather is very wet there and so Shetland ponies are bred to cope with cold and wet weather, and they prefer it to the heat.

How to keep Shetland ponies warm in winter?

Shetland ponies have several ways to keep warm. First, they are compact and naturally fat, so they have less surface area to lose heat from.

They also have a special fluffy coat with two layers, short hair next to the body to keep them warm and longer hairs to trap a layer of air next to the skin. So, Shetland ponies have a built-in duvet, and unless they are old or their coat is not fluffy, they can be warmer without a rug.

Why do Shetland ponies eat hay in winter?

Shetland ponies eat hay in winter when there is less grass. They have a special digestive system which is called hindgut fermentation. This is how they break down grass and hay and it acts as an internal central heating system. So as long as the ponies keep eating, they keep warm.

Finally, Shetland ponies like to run around and play in winter to keep warm and be sociable with their friends.

Pause for a pony: 3 minutes of calm, ASMR

Did you know that some of the sounds we hear can be very calming and can help you to relax. Birdsong is one of these sounds.

It’s actually got a scientific name: Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or ASMR for short, and it’s the feeling of relaxation that is felt after listening to certain trigger calming sounds, like birds singing the dawn chorus.

ASMR is also known as brain massage and can be triggered by placid sights too, such as ponies and the sunrise.

So, this week, our gift to you is to sit back and relax for 3 minutes of calm. Pause for a pony and melt your stress away with the ponies at sunrise in these difficult lockdown times.

Shetland pony Snowdrop’s snowy day

Come and share Shetland pony Snowdrop’s snowy day at Shetland Pony Club.

Shetland pony Snowdrop’s snowy day

Snowdrop is enjoying the glorious winter sunshine and crisp snow at The Ranch. But are the other Shetland ponies being kind to him?

Are all the Shetland ponies happy?

Shetland ponies can eat for most of the day and night, so with plenty of hay to enjoy munching, they are very happy in the snow. Eating food helps to keep them warm and the sunshine dries their fluffy coats. Toffee and lots of the other ponies look happy today, but what about Snowdrop?

Find out what makes Snowdrop happy?

Rosemary knows the secret to make Shetland pony Snowdrop’s snowy day.  Find out what she does for him.

Heavy snowfall’s no problem for fluffy Shetland ponies

In this week’s video we find out that heavy snowfall’s no problem for fluffy Shetland ponies. They are very happy outside in the snow, as long as they have plenty to eat and drink and friends for company. They look adorable too!

Heavy snowfall’s no problem for fluffy Shetland ponies

Shetland ponies are adapted to live in the cold harsh weather of the Shetland Islands, 120 miles north of the top of mainland Scotland.  So, the heavy snow in Surrey this week was no problem for our delightful fluffy friends at Shetland Pony Club.

Wonderful fluffy coats

You can see that the Shetland ponies have such fluffy and well-insulated coats. So the snow can settle on them and does not melt, but they are still warm and dry inside.  They have thick manes and tails to keep out the worst weather, with fluffy ears and long eyelashes to protect them too.

Do Shetland ponies need a stable in the snow?

Our Shetland ponies have access to a field shelter and stable at all times of the year, but they choose never to go in them in the snow or rain. They go in mainly in summer to avoid flies. In winter, their natural coats protect them and they find sheltered places to rest in their fields, behind hedges and trees.

How to care for Shetland ponies in the snow?

As long as the ponies have plenty of hay to eat, and access to water that’s not frozen they are happy outside in the snow, and they look adorable!

What to look for in a Shetland pony

This week we learn what to look for in a Shetland pony and what qualities we should seek out when choosing the ideal pony to buy.

What to look for in a Shetland pony

Batman is a pedigree Shetland pony who is registered with the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society and has many features that make him a quality Shetland pony.  He has a very long tail, a full mane and a glossy coat that keeps him warm in the winter.

Features of a quality Shetland pony

Prince William is also a quality Shetland pony. He has small fluffy ears that keep the weather out, with a broad face and wide nostrils to help him breathe easily. He has kind eyes and is friendly and interested in all that’s around him, which is known as presence. Good quality Shetland ponies are kind, engaging and fun to be with.

Why are Shetland ponies so small?

Shetland ponies are small and hardy because they are naturally bred to live in the very harsh conditions of the Shetland Islands. There is little food and shelter, so being small gives them the best chance of survival. Quality Shetland ponies have short legs, upright hooves and stout bodies, so they are very strong for their size.

Find out more

Batman and Prince William are great examples of what to look for in a pedigree Shetland pony, but Toffee also has many quality features, even though he is not registered. So, do look at the pony, as well as the paperwork when choosing the perfect Shetland pony to buy.

Our Shetland ponies life in lockdown

Our Shetland ponies are on their winter break at the moment, so let’s join them for a winter update during lockdown.

Our Shetland ponies life in lockdown

During the winter the ponies are on holiday.  They live naturally and graze and rest in sunny spots together as a herd in our beautiful meadows. They like to rest by trees and in groups with their friends.

What do Shetland ponies eat in lockdown?

As well as grass, the Shetland ponies need a little extra in their winter lockdown. They eat hay, which is grass that is dried on our farms in the summer and gives them a tasty fibrous meal in winter.  They eat if off the ground, spread out in little piles.

How do Shetland ponies play in lockdown?

Once they have eaten, the Shetland ponies like to take some exercise and have some fun.  Can you see how they do this in this weeks’ video?

Peace during lockdown

After their fun the ponies get to enjoy the beautiful Surrey Hills sunset.  Do watch the video, stay safe and share a moment of peace with the ponies.

Enjoy the best of 2020 at Shetland Pony Club

In our last video of the year, we enjoy the best of 2020 at Shetland Pony Club.  After the wettest winter on record, we started riding in March with our members enjoying being back in the saddle again.

Lockdown life for the Shetland ponies

After just two weeks of riding, we had a 3-month lockdown and were not able to ride. So, the ponies went back on holiday and were able to eat and run around in the wildflower meadows. It was fun, but all that eating meant that the ponies put on weight and had to be weighed weekly to get back into shape.

The best of 2020

The moon daisies and poppies in our wildflower meadows were spectacular. For many of our members, the best of 2020 was being able to visit their ponies at a social distance and take them walking through the rewilding fields to enjoy being outside with their ponies in nature.

Hands, face, and loads of space

When we were able to ride again there were new routines to learn for the staff and all the children and parents, with lots of hand washing, mask wearing, and social distancing outside in the many acres of space at the Ranch.  We were able to welcome lots of children to enjoy pony fun and summer camp days too.

Results and routines

With exams cancelled our staff made the best of 2020, enjoying being outside with the ponies through the really hot summer months. We even had a graduation ceremony for Madeleine!  Routines continued for the ponies with visits from the farrier, dentist and also the vet.

Halloween pony fun

With members lessons over we enjoyed our annual Halloween Pumpkin Rides, COVID – style, before it all came to an end with another lockdown in November.

Thank you so much for all your support in 2020.

The ponies are on their extended winter holiday now and we look forward to welcoming you all for another season of pony fun from 6 March 2021.

How long do Shetland ponies live?

People often ask us how long do Shetland ponies live? Let’s find out more about the Shetland pony breed and what their characteristics are.

A native breed

Shetland ponies are a native breed, which means that they have adapted to their environment over centuries and they can live on the Shetland Islands successfully.  Conditions are tough 120 miles off the North of the Scottish mainland, so Shetland ponies have become small, hardy and able to live outside in all weathers.

Do Shetland ponies grow quickly?

As conditions are tough, the ponies have learned to live off brambles, heather and seaweed. They have adapted by growing very slowly and are not ready for riding until they are 5 or 6 years old.  As they are so tough, they can then live for a long time, but how long do Shetland ponies live?

Stop worrying about lockdown! Enjoy our 2020 Shetland Pony Club review

Stop worrying about lockdown and let’s enjoy our 2020 Shetland Pony Club review, as it has been a year like no other, for all of us.  We opened in March after the wettest February on record and were looking forward to some lovely sunny weather.

Stop worrying about lockdown!

After just two weeks of pony fun in March, the national lockdown gave the ponies an extended holiday and time to enjoy the lovely spring weather that followed. There were amazing wildflowers for the ponies to enjoy – but where were the children? The ponies did a lot of eating and playing and Hector Moonbeam even joined a birthday party on zoom.

Enjoy our 2020 Shetland Pony Club review

We finally opened in June for members only, with Shetland pony leading and extensive COVID-safe planning and training for all.  We had a summer of pony fun, with camps and parties, followed by lots of Halloween Pumpkin Rides this autumn.

It was tough for our staff too, with exams and graduations cancelled, we had our own celebrations at The Ranch.

Life for the ponies went on as normal with visits from the farrier and dentist, and lots more eating!

Now we have gone full circle and the ponies are on an early holiday, as we lockdown and remember all the Shetland pony fun in 2020.

Watch the video to find out more:

Beware, it’s Horsey Halloween at Shetland Pony Club

Beware, it’s Horsey Halloween at Shetland Pony Club – there’s a chill in the air and it’s getting dark. The ponies are waiting for the sun to go down and the full moon to shine. Then all the animals that love to play at night can come out.  There are bats and badgers… but what’s that scary thing?

Yikes – run away at Horsey Halloween!

Something has scared Dinky.  What can it be?  Is it the spooky outfits, the animals that play at night, or something else, this Horsey Halloween?

How fast do Shetland ponies run for fun?

At the end of a busy day, the Shetland ponies love to run for fun – but how fast can they run and who runs the fastest?

Watch Dinky speed along

Dinky is one of our smallest Shetland ponies and he can really run quickly.  See him speed out of the ranch to the pasture at the end of the day.  Wow – watch him go!

Toffee also enjoys a good gallop – enjoy seeing him lead the ponies across the hill – just for fun!  What a joy to watch, well-done ponies.

Farriers visit before the Modelling Day

Creme Brulee needs his hooves to be in tip-top shape and really smart, so the farrier is visiting him to give his hooves a special trim up.  Trimming hooves is a very skilled job and the farrier has to train for 4 years to learn his trade. Creme Brulee knows that he has to be patient and is very good with his pony pedicure!

Photo shoot for Crème Brulee

Come and see Creme Brulee the Shetland Pony being brushed and washed and all ready for his Modelling Day.  He loves being the centre of attention and has a great time at his photoshoot, with lots of gorgeous pictures taken.  Well done Crème Brulee!

How to find a Shetland pony: Hector Moonbeam’s story

We are often asked how to find a Shetland pony and where our adorable Shetland ponies have come from. In this week’s Shetland Pony Club TV, Rosemary shares the story of how we found Hector Moonbeam.

Where do Shetland ponies come from?

The Shetland pony breed originated on the Shetland Islands, which are about 120 miles north of mainland Scotland. That’s a really long way to travel. Luckily, we found Hector Moonbeam at the opposite end of the country, near the white cliffs of Dover.  It was so long ago that the internet was not used for advertising and directions and we read about Hector in a newspaper advertisement.

What do you think happened when Rosemary went to meet Hector 12 years ago? He was a good choice, as he has been with us ever since we started Shetland Pony Club in 2008.

Shetland Pony Nottingham’s Vet Visit

This week we find out about Shetland Pony Nottingham’s Vet Visit.

Nottingham had a small cut just above his hoof, when he came in for breakfast one morning. We decided to organise a vet visit to make sure he was going to be OK.

Vet visit for Nottingham

The vet needed to put in a stitch to help the cut heal and so Nottingham had to have some medicine to make him sleepy for his treatment.  He was a very good pony and has now got a big bandage on his leg to protect the cut.

Stable rest for a Shetland Pony

Now Nottingham has to rest in the nice clean stable for a few days to let his leg heal up.  The children can visit him there and give him lots of nice hay and clean water until it is better. Get well soon Nottingham!

Learning to be a Shetland Pony Vet

Would you like to learn to be a Shetland Pony Vet? Lots of our staff have trained to be vets and some are hoping to get places at vet school tomorrow, on A-Level results day. Good luck staff!

Many of the children who ride with us would like to be vets too. So, at Shetland Pony Club Camp the children have been learning about their pony’s health and how to care for them.

Caring for your pony

The children have learned the “points of the horse” and what to call them.  They have learned about the different feeds a pony can eat and how to mix them up.  It’s important for the stable to be clean, with fresh hay and water too.

Learning to be a Shetland Pony Vet

Vets need to be able to recognize poisonous plants to keep their ponies safe.  They also need to see if they are healthy by measuring their weight and listening to their hearts. It’s helpful to learn how to bandage a pony too, so the children learn how to do all these things at Shetland Pony Club camp.

Association of British Riding School’s pony health certificate

At the end of a busy day of riding and pony learning the children are awarded their certificates for excellent learning. Well done children!

Shetland Pony weigh-in after lockdown

During lockdown the Shetland ponies did a lot of resting and eating.  Some of them have put on too much weight.  How can we tell?

Shetland Pony weigh-in

At Shetland Pony Club we have some special pony scales so that we can have a Shetland Pony weigh-in to see if the ponies are a healthy weight for their size.

Are all the ponies a healthy weight?

Honeybee, Snowdrop and Elgin Sunset are all a healthy weight for their size, but are all the ponies the right weight?  Which ponies need to eat less and do more exercise?

New normal riding at Shetland Pony Club

We’re learning a new normal with our riding at Shetland Pony Club.  It is so exciting to be riding again as some of the restrictions in the UK ease.  Things are not quite the same, but the children are enjoying learning the new rules and having fun with the ponies.

What is the new normal at Shetland Pony Club

There’s lots of signs and reminders for us all to keep apart and parents are putting the riding hats on their children when they arrive.  The children are enjoying brushing their ponies, with individual grooming kits, and can they even paint their hooves.

So, what can parents do?

The parents viewing gallery is proving very popular, with lovely socially distanced benches, to enjoy watching the children ride and just being in the countryside.  The children love riding past and showing off their riding skills too.

Is that all?

We all need to remember to put our equipment in the right place for cleaning and there’s lots of handwashing and hand gel too.  Everyone is doing really well with the new rules for pony riding, so we can enjoy pony fun again at Shetland Pony Club.

The ponies have been preparing for riding with 5 weeks of grooming and leading. The team have been preparing too, with lots of training and tests in the new procedures, as well as cleaning all the tools and surfaces.

We need the right equipment too, so thanks to our builder for the new gates and a mum, for making our team lovely masks.

Plans in place, so now we can open

How to feed a Shetland pony

This week, we find out how to feed a Shetland pony, in one of our series of pony advice videos.  We all know that ponies eat grass, but did you know that they are browsers and enjoy eating prickly plants like thistles and blackberries.

Unusual foods for Shetland ponies

Shetland ponies like to eat a varied diet with lots of different plants containing different minerals to keep them healthy.  In the Shetland Isles, Shetland ponies eat an unusual plant that’s not available at The Ranch.  Watch the video to find out what it is and see what our ponies enjoy eating as an alternative.

An important message from Rosemary

Dear Members and the Shetland Pony Club Community,

It has been 8 weeks since we closed The Ranch to protect our NHS and stop the spread of the Coronavirus. The ponies have been missing you and wondering where everybody is.

We have been so grateful for your support of the lockdown and for all the kind messages we have received through our new online pony club and on our social media pages.

As you will be aware, the UK government has recently announced some changes to the lockdown and we are working to see what this means for us. We know you are all keen to see your ponies, get outdoors and start riding again, so we are looking closely at the latest information from the government and Sport England to see how we can make this possible at Shetland Pony Club. There will be detailed guidelines published by the British Horse Society in the next few days. We will review them closely to see how we can return to riding in a safe and phased way.

Safety of our rider’s, staff, parents and grandparents is our number one priority at Shetland Pony Club, so we are considering carefully the best way forward to get you back in the saddle.

We will be in touch again shortly, by email, to share more news of our plans and will keep you updated with key information on our website and social media channels.

We have missed you all and are so looking forward to riding with you again.

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this week’s pony update and another fun pony craft idea for you to try at home.

Stay alert and keep safe from

Rosemary and all the ponies at Shetland Pony Club

Join the Shetland pony Easter egg hunts

Easter is just around the corner and we join the Shetland pony Easter egg hunts to find out what happens.

First, the ponies are decorated by the children.  Can you see Toffee?  How is he decorated for Easter and does he look special?

Then, it’s time to follow the Easter egg trail around our acres of farmland in the beautiful Surrey countryside.  We love to keep a lookout and see if the children can see any real Easter bunnies.

At the end of the trail there is an Easter egg hunt for real Easter eggs and the children love hunting for them in the meadows.

We then put our ponies away and finish with a lovely Easter rosette presentation which is all good fun!

Stop ponies! All that mud, means a new rug

With last weekend’s storm Ciara in the UK, following up on the wettest December on record, it’s not surprising that there’s some mud at Shetland Pony Club. The ponies love to roll in the mud as a way of self-grooming and relaxing. It also is a great way to itch and help to shed their winter coats.

But it’s not great when we are getting ready for a season of pony fun at The Ranch!

New rugs to the rescue

So, we have ordered some new rugs and headcollars for the Shetland ponies, to help keep them clean for pony birthday parties and riding.

But, what size rugs shall we get to fit all the ponies?  Join the team as they fit them onto the ponies.

Which pony does the rug fit, and which ones need a larger sized rug?

Can Shetland ponies dream?

This week we find out: can Shetland ponies dream? In this pony information video, we learn about how ponies sleep, and whether they dream?

How do Shetland ponies sleep?

Ponies have special joints which enable them to lock their back legs, so that they can rest comfortably and sleep whilst standing up, without falling over.

This helps to keep them safe, so that they can be ready to run away at a moments notice, which is important for survival in the wild.

How long to Shetland ponies sleep for?

Surprisingly, horses and ponies only need to sleep for 5-6 hours in 24 hours, much less sleep than humans.  They can sleep at any time of day or night and they break their sleep up into lots of naps.

So, can Shetland ponies dream?

We know that ponies have about an hour of deep sleep a day, when they lie down, often with a friend watching over them. We think that they dream when in this deep sleep, but can only guess what they at dream about.

Watch the video to find out more:

If you’d like to know more about how horses sleep you can read this interesting article here about how horses sleep.

The ponies are on their winter holidays until 7 March 2020.

What do Shetland ponies do when they are not eating?

Did you know that Shetland ponies can graze for up to 17 hours per day? That’s a lot of eating.

When the grass is frosty, like this week in England, the ponies know not to eat too much grass, as it will make their stomach’s sore.

So, what else do Shetland ponies do?

Well, the ponies love to itch and rub and you can see who is doing this in the video.

They also scratch each other to make friends and bond with the others.

The Shetland ponies also love to trot, canter and gallop around the meadows for fun.

When their playtime is over, they snooze in the sunshine. Can you see Toffee and Teddy Bear taking a nap, so adorable!

Ponies do not lie down for very long, maybe thirty minutes maximum, as this can be unsafe for them in the wild.  They take it in turns to lie down and will do so at any time of day, with their friends watching over them.

So, the ponies keep very busy on their winter holidays and there’s plenty to do when the grass is frosty.
