Today our Shetland Pony Batman, is having his special plastic horseshoes refitted. Let’s find out how they work.
First, the old shoes need to come off. They look a bit worn out, it’s time for a new set!
Before the new ones are put on Batman’s hooves need to be trimmed back. It’s a tricky job and you need a specialist to cut back hooves. Farriers train for a long time in the UK and they are highly skilled at trimming ponies’ hooves back.
It’s time for your pedicure Batman!
Next, the new plastic horseshoes need to be the correct size. They are put in boiling water, so you’ve got to be careful.
Batman now has to stand very still on the rubber mat whilst the new horseshoes are being glued to his hooves. The Farrier must be careful not to glue their fingers together at this point.
Then Batman must wait a few minutes to make sure the horseshoes have set. Batman’s new shoes look great, and he’s been very patient during the process, well done Batman!

Join Rosemary in this week’s video as she answers your question, are Shetland ponies naughty?
Rosemary explains why Shetland ponies are often misunderstood and are actually well behaved when looked after properly. Shetland ponies need as much training, care, love, and attention as a big horse does. Shetlands are often left in a field for a long time and not exercised enough. When ridden infrequently they can have a reputation for being ‘naughty’, when they simply don’t understand what is being asked of them.
What helps a Shetland pony to not be naughty?
Companionship: Shetlands are herd animals and like having lots of friends to play with in the field.
Good feeding: this is often a big challenge for an owner as Shetlands are so small they can be overfed. It’s a real skill to make sure they have enough food to keep them healthy and fit but not too much that they are overfed.
Exercise: Shetlands need regular riding and exercise to help with their training. Shetlands ponies often don’t get enough exercise because they are so small and no one is able to ride them. We are lucky at Shetland Pony Club that we have lots of children to ride our ponies, to keep them fit and healthy.
The Ranch opens on Saturday 5th March 2022 – Sunday 27th November 2022.

From Rosemary, the Shetland Pony Club Team and all the Shetland ponies
Take a moment to enjoy a Snowy Merry Christmas with the adorable ponies at Shetland Pony Club this festive season.
Which pony is the snowiest?
The Shetland ponies have a double layer of hair in their coats to keep them warm in the snow. They also keep warm by eating hay. Which pony is the snowiest? Do you think it is Fudge, Sundance, Toffee or Honeybee?
We would like to thank all our members, customers, suppliers and friends from all over the world for all your support this year.
Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas from Rosemary, Liz, Camilla, the Team and all the ponies at Shetland Pony Club
P.S.
