Bilbo has just had a short journey to get to us. He has come from a lovely family where he has been ridden and cared for by some children who have sadly outgrown him.

Join Rosemary in this week’s video to learn how to have a well-behaved Shetland Pony.
People are often amazed how well-behaved our ponies are. It’s important that we have suitable ponies for children so they can have a safe and enjoyable time. Here are Rosemary’s top tips on how to have a well-behaved pony:
Do not overfeed
Regular exercise
Suitable companions in their field, so they feel safe and happy in the herd
Lots of rest and sleep between work
Kindness, gentleness, and patience, to take the time to teach him properly what you want him to do
If your pony is not behaving well, he may be uncomfortable and may need to see the Vet or Equine dentist

Join Rosemary in this week’s advice video as she answers your question, do Shetland ponies need horseshoes?
Our ponies don’t generally need horseshoes, this is called having a ‘barefoot pony’. It’s something that is becoming increasingly popular in the horsey world.
Why don’t our Shetland ponies need horseshoes?
Shetland ponies have good strong, sturdy hooves that don’t often crack
The children who ride are lightweight and don’t put pressure on the pony’s hooves
The ground that we ride on is soft and doesn’t have stones

Join Rosemary in this week’s video as she answers your question, are Shetlands expensive to keep?
We often get asked the question if it’s cheaper to keep a Shetland pony rather than a bigger horse, as Shetlands are much smaller. Rosemary explains what you need to keep a Shetland pony happy and if it’s expensive to keep one.
What do I need to keep a Shetland and are they expensive to keep?

Shetland ponies originate from the Shetland Isles, where there are no trees for shelter and the weather is wet, cold, and windy. Being small means that Shetland ponies are able to adapt and survive the harsh conditions.
Are our Shetlands fully grown?
Yes, our ponies are fully grown, many people think they are babies or foals however most of our Shetlands are teenagers now. We don’t have any young foals or young stock at Shetland Pony Club.
How to measure a Shetland pony?
Shetland ponies are measured from the ground to the top of their wither. You measure them in inches. This is different from other horses or ponies who are normally measured in hands. Our smallest pony, Snowdrop, is only 32 inches high! Balmoral and Mufasa are our biggest ponies at 42 inches high.
Bookings are now fully open for 2022 riding. The office will be open throughout the winter for 2022 bookings.
