Why are ponies good for children – The Science: Parents Advice Part 1

Why are ponies good for children? Parents often ask us this question, and in the first video in our Parents’ Advice Series, Rosemary, Founder of Shetland Pony Club, shares the science that explains this important subject.

Spending time in nature

There are lots of benefits for children of being in nature. Shetland Pony Club is a Founder Member of the Children and Nature Network where there is an extensive library of scientific evidence demonstrating that being outside in nature helps with long term mental and physical health.

Connection with an animal

Being with an animal gives the benefits of responsibility and empathy. Children experience love and responsibility when caring for their pony. Scientific studies have also shown that it can improve decision making.

Chin up, on your pony!

Being on screens causes us to look down and have poor posture. Looking up and sitting tall is known to make you feel good and is an important part of riding safely. Learning new pony skills boosts your confidence and increases your happiness too.

In summary, there are lots of good reasons why ponies are good for children.

Keeping Shetland Ponies in Winter

People often ask what happens to our ponies in the winter months when we are closed. In this week’s video we find out where the ponies live and what they feed on during the winter months.

Do the Shetland Ponies live in a stable?

Our Shetland Ponies live in fields with lots of natural shelter including trees, brambles, bushes and hills. When it’s really windy they can use the natural landscape to shelter from the bad weather.

Fluffy Coats!

Shetland Ponies have a two layer coat to keep them furry and warm in winter.

Food and friends!

We make sure the ponies have plenty of hay to keep their tummies full and clean water to drink. With friends to keep them company, the ponies have a great holiday over the winter.

Small Ponies deliver Big Dreams – Shetland Pony Club’s 2023 Review

See how our Small Ponies deliver Big Dreams in our special video reviewing the ponies’ busy year at Shetland Pony Club.

New facilities and lots of training

The year began with snow, just like the Shetland Islands, so the ponies were fine. Over the winter we built a new extension to our viewing gallery, to welcome parents and riders. The ponies and team trained hard for opening in March. There were lots of new paths for all our riders and Club Members to explore.

Coronation Celebrations and Community Support

After glorious spring weather and Easter riding, it was time to celebrate the Coronation with Pony Tea Parties and the Big Help Out. We also welcomed Scouts and Community Groups. We supported Cancer Research UK with a Sunset Pony Walking evening.

Poppy Fields and Pony Experiences

June brought amazing wildflowers and our riders were able to enjoy their Own a Pony Experiences in the poppy fields of our beautiful Surrey Hills.

Summer Camp and Shetland Shopping

Vets Day, Cowboys Day, Nature Day and Gymkhana Day all featured in our Summer Camp programme.  Children improved their riding and learned pony care to gain ABRS+ awards. Our shop also opened in its Vintage Rice Trailer selling gifts from the Shetland Islands and featuring Shetland ponies.

Autumn Award

Half-term and Halloween riding and fun were followed by winning the UK Enterprise Award for the Best Children’s Equine Experience. Well done ponies, what a big year it’s been!

Looking forward to seeing you all for pony riding and learning in 2024.

Fluffy ponies enjoy cold weather

Although the weather in England is very mild at the moment, Shetland ponies are well adapted to live in cold weather, with fantastic fluffy coats that keep them warm.

They are so well insulated that the snow doesn’t melt on their coats. To help keep them warm we feed the ponies hay during snowy weather whilst the grass is covered.

Do you know your Shetland ponies?

  • Can you see which pony is tucking into the hay?
  • Which pony is the fluffiest?
