At what age can you ride a Shetland pony?
Rosemary talks us through the minimum and maximum age you need to be to ride a Shetland pony. What do you think it is?
At Shetland Pony Club the minimum age you can ride a Shetland pony is 3 years old. From the age of 2½ years old most children have the core strength to sit upright and enjoy a ride on a miniature Shetland pony, on the lead rein. Children can keep riding the larger Standards Shetland ponies until they are about 12 years old. So, there is a decade of fun in Shetland ponies for children from age 3 to 12 years old.
What is the maximum height and weight to ride a Shetland pony?
As a guideline, the maximum height is 5’1” or 155cm and the maximum weight is 7.5 stone or 48kg to ride one of the larger Standard Shetland ponies?
What height is a Miniature and a Standard Shetland pony?
Miniature Shetland ponies are the small ones. For showing classes, miniature Shetland ponies need to be less than 34 inches and Standard Shetland ponies can be up to 42 inches tall.
What does “on the lead rein mean”?
On the lead rein means that your child’s pony is led by a helper, who is in control of the pony, so that your child can enjoy a fun and safe ride.

Book now for Summer pony riding
May is a very busy month at Shetland Pony Club, so we’d love you to join us for pony fun, from June. Do book ahead as the ponies are very popular. Summer Camp bookings are now open too.
Which pony ride should I choose?
Starter Rides – are 45 minutes long and are specially designed as first riding experiences for children from age 2½ years old. They cost £40 per child.
Pony Mornings – are 2 hours long and are delightful early riding and learning experiences for children from age 4 years old. They cost £55 per child.
Summer pony camp days and weeks – enjoy the whole day with your favourite Shetland Pony. Learn to ride him, look after him and enjoy being with him, all day long. 9.30am – 4pm, Summer holidays only. Age 5+. £125 per day or £500 per week.
