Shetland Pony Club’s War Horse Poppy Parade
Shetland Pony Club marked the centenary of the end of the Great War with a War Horse Poppy Parade.
Members and friends of Shetland Pony Club came together to create a War Horse Poppy Garden in support of the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
The children prepared the ponies with poppies and beautiful poppy rosettes, handmade for the occasion.
The War Horse Poppy Parade
All the ponies and guests stood for 2 minutes silence to remember the war horses in the 1914-1918 war, followed by the bugle call, Sunset, which would have been heard in the military horse lines at the end of each day.
At the end of the Great War, when the guns fell silent 100 years ago, many soldiers simply walked home as there was no time to organise transport. So, we looked out over the North Downs to the coast to symbolise looking for those returning soldiers. Then we took a long walk home with the ponies, as the returning soldiers would have done, to conclude our War Horse Poppy Parade.
During the war the soldiers far from home found comfort in the quiet bond they shared with their noble war horses.

Pony Mornings – are 2 hours long and are perfect early riding experiences for children from age 4 years old. £49 per child.
Starter Rides – are 45 minutes long and specially designed first riding experiences for children from age 2½ years old. £39 per child.

Our last riding weekend before the winter is 24-25th November, then the ponies take a holiday and will be ready for more pony fun from Saturday 2nd March 2019. Details of when bookings open again will be on the weekly emails.
