Do Shetland ponies need a dentist?

Lots of people ask us about caring for Shetland ponies. A frequently asked question is: do Shetland ponies need a dentist?

Yes, they do…

Our specialist equine dentist, Rob, comes to see our Shetland ponies regularly, to check their teeth.  It’s a good job to do in the winter when the ponies are not working.

Why do the Shetland ponies need a dentist?

Shetland ponies’ teeth grow throughout their lives, as the tough grass that they eat wears them down. The horse dentist checks them often to see if they are growing and wearing evenly. Ponies need good teeth so that they can eat grass easily.

The ponies don’t mind the dentist coming and they are not tied up when he treats them.  He has a special mouthpiece, so that the ponies can hold their mouth open and he can care for their teeth safely.

First, he checks the ponies’ dental records on his computer, just like your dentist does, then he records any changes.

Once the ponies are finished, he watches them eating to check that they are comfortable with their treatment. Well done ponies!
